Paxil as an Anxiety and Depression Treatment

Do you suffer from anxiety and depression? If you are burdened by symptoms and need an effective anxiety and depression treatment, then you may want to learn more about the prescription drug Paxil.

Although scientists do not know the exact causes of anxiety and depression, they do know that these conditions are related to neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are the messengers of the mind. They transmit the messages between the nerve cells. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that, when produced by the body in moderate amounts, has a calming influence on the mind.

When used on a long-term basis Paxil helps regulate the level of serotonin in the brain. Most patients find that using this medication as an anxiety and depression treatment helps to control some or all of their symptoms. It also has been used to treat other medical conditions such as panic disorder and premenstrual dysphonic disorder (PMDD).

Side effects are always a possibility with the use of prescription drugs. The possible side effects of Paxil include yawning, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, sweating, sexual side effects, and abnormal vision. Frequently, the side effects will go away with time. Patients who use this prescription medication rarely discontinue its use based solely on the side effects. Sometimes a minor change in dosage, or taking it with a meal, is all that's required. (Check with your doctor first!)

Women who are pregnant should notify their doctor immediately about any medications they are using. Paxil is not approved for women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant. Babies born to mothers using this medication are at increased risk of heart malformations or may have trouble breathing and maintaining body temperature.

Women who are breastfeeding should not use antidepressant medication because the medicine can be found in breast milk. Women currently taking such medication who become pregnant or begin breastfeeding should see their doctor immediately. They should NOT, however, suddenly discontinue their antidepressants until they confer with their health care professional and have their anxiety and depression treatment plan reevaluated.

You may have heard that patients should never stop taking antidepressant medications without consulting their doctor. Antidepressant medications should never be stopped immediately. Discontinuing Paxil and other medications for treatment of anxiety and depression abruptly can cause the return of symptoms. Your health care professional will tell you how long you will need to use them and when it's safe to discontinue use.

Paxil is an effective anxiety and depression treatment, but it is not for everyone. Only you and your doctor can decide if Paxil is right for you.
